Dear Families and Community Members,

Celebrate an outstanding teacher in your community by nominating them for the sixth annual Big Apple Awards, which recognize teachers across the City who inspire students, model great instruction, and enrich their school communities.

NOMINATE by November 27

 All nominated teachers will be notified that a member of their community took the time to honor them for making an impact on New York City’s youth.

Everyone can submit a Big Apple Awards nomination—parents, students, teachers, staff, and community members, and any full-time district, charter, or early childhood education center teacher may be nominated. This year’s Big Apple Awards represent another exciting opportunity to celebrate our diverse teachers who are setting the foundation for New York City’s next generation, and engage in a citywide dialogue about excellent teaching.

Big Apple Awards nomination is a great way to show your appreciation to a teacher for all they do.

Big Apple Award recipients will be recognized by the NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, the NYC Department of Education community, and will have the opportunity to represent all teachers citywide during the 2018-19 school year as a member of the Chancellor’s Teacher Advisory Group.

How to register: Online

The Library HotSpot Program is a collaborative program by New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library and Department of Education to provide thousands of NYC K12 students with free internet access for the rest of the school year. This program addresses the needs of more than 1 in 5 New York City households who do not have home access to high-speed internet services.

In order to participate in the Library HotSpot Program, you must register for and attend a patron lending event and be prepared to present your NYPL adult library card. In addition, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

~ Have a child in NYC public school
~ Have a valid library card and be at least 18
~ Have less than $15 fines on your library card
~ Have no internet access at home

The mobile HotSpot can be checked out on a patron’s account through the end of the school year. All devices are due back July 5. Please return the HotSpot, charger and box by July 5, 2018.

The cost to replace the Library HotSpot device is $100. The late fee for each day the Library HotSpot is overdue is $1 per day.

Maximum 20 HotSpots per event; pre-registration required.

Daily Routine for 2017-2018 School Year

MORNING ROUTINE
Setting the tone and modeling the importance of arriving to school on time is an extremely valuable lesson for our children.  PS 8’s doors open at 7:50AM and our arrival procedures are as follows:
 
Grades 3, 4 and 5:  Students will enter the building on Bainbridge Avenue (Exit 7)
Grades 1 and 2:  Students will enter the building through Exits 5 and 6 (across from the mini building)
Kindergarten:  Students will enter through the main door of the mini-school. 

LUNCH ROUTINES
This year we will have four lunch periods during the school day.  The times are as follows:
Kindergarten                      10:17-11:07 a.m.
1st Grade & 2nd Grade      11:07-11:57 a.m.
3rd  Grade & 4th  Grade     11:57-12:47 p.m.
5th Grade                           12:47-1:37 p.m.

DISMISSAL EXITS
Kindergarten & Class 405: Parents pick up in the Mini-School  - Use the middle door to the classrooms EXIT A
Grade One: Parents will pick up in the cafeteria - Enter and exit through Exit #8 (temporary).
Grade Two: Exit 5/6 to the yard
Grade Three: Exit 2/3 on Briggs Avenue towards Mosholu Pkwy
Grade Four: Exit 10 (temporary) - Alleyway on Briggs Avenue
Grade Five: Exit 7 to Bainbridge Avenue

Hello parents and students! Welcome back to another fantastic year at P.S. 8!
We have a few very important messages for you, so please read this entire message.

Please download and read the Parent Handbook and Academic Policy documents. These, and other important parent documents, will be available on the P.S. 8 website.

 School starts for students on Thursday, September 7th.  Please see the top of the main page (www.ps8lions.com) for the special arrival procedures for September 7th and 8th, as well as the normal routines that start September 11th.

Breakfast is available free for students everyday starting at 7:30AM. Please enter the cafeteria through the ramp at Exit #8 on Bainbridge Ave.

Your child will be receiving many forms and documents in the first few weeks. Please check daily and return any forms as soon as possible.

We have many new and exciting things coming your way this year, so come back often for notices and information!

April 20, 2017 - Box Tops for Education Contest

The Box Tops Committee is pleased to announce our first contest. For the month of April, we will be collecting Box Tops from individual students rather than classes. The student who collects the most Box Tops by April 28th will become Principal for the Day! This lucky winner will get to spend the whole day with Mrs. Tahiraj and help her run the school. The winner will be announced on May 1st. Check all your boxes and ask those family members for help!

REMEMBER: ALL BOX TOPS MYST BE IN SCHOOL BY APRIL 28TH.
Fine Print: Box Yops cannot be expired and must be neatly cut. Please place your Box Tops in an envelope with your name and class number. Box Tops will be collected on April 28th or may be turned in at any time to Ms. Sabia in room 318.

The State ELA test is in full swing! Remember to have a healthy breakfast to energize that brain! The school has breakfast available every day at 7:30 AM. Also, be sure to get plenty of sleep! These tests give your brain quite a workout, so please take care of yourselves. Even the teachers are looking forward to their naps!

We hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend and took some time to reflect on why we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many classes took the time to discuss the historical importance and how we can continue to learn from his teachings.



We are hosting parent introductions to i-Ready in the next few weeks with Mr. Russello. All parents of students K-5 are encouraged to attend and learn about the program and how it can be used for free at home to support your child's learning. Please come! There are a few dates to choose from, so you can pick which time is best for you:
  • Monday, January 23rd at 8:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, January 24th at 2:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, January 25th at 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, January 31st at 2:30 p.m.
