Cell Phone & Electronic
Device Policy
In order to create an environment conducive to learning by minimizing distractions caused by cell phones and other personal internet-enabled electronic devices, and to ensure the safety and focus of all students, New York State Education Law §2803 (effective August 1, 2025) requires all New York State schools to adopt a policy that prohibits the use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day on school grounds.
An “internet-enabled electronic device” is any device capable of connecting to internet, including cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, iPads, and portable music/entertainment systems. During the school day, students may use school/NYCPS-issued devices.
📵 P.S. 8 Device Policy
Students will not be permitted to use or access personal internet-enabled electronic devices from arrival until the end of the school day (8:00 AM - 2:20 PM), including during lunch.
Device Pouches / Storage
- Grades K-5, students will place their devices in device pouches at arrival time; pouches will be activated and locked, limiting access throughout the school day. Pouches remain in student's possession. At dismissal, pouches will be unlocked and students can access their devices again. Students are responsible for returning their device pouches to school each day.
⚠️ Confiscation
Any student who refuses to use a device pouch, or is found with a device on them, will have it confiscated. A parent will need to pick it up at the school.
